– Eight people have been arrested in Nakuru on suspicion that they were plotting to interrupt a thanksgiving service at Afraha Stadium following the termination of the cases against Kenyans at the International Criminal Court – President Uhuru Kenyatta had invited Kenyans to the rally in order the celebrate the end of his deputy William Ruto and Joshua Sang’s cases Police in Nakuru have arrested eight people for allegedly planning to disrupt a rally meant to celebrate the termination of International Criminal Court (ICC) cases against Kenyans. Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Wanyama Musiambo, on Friday, April 15, said the individuals were apprehended at a hotel in the town the previous night. “Those arrested were holding an unlawful meeting at a hotel. They are being interrogated… We assure all those who wish to attend the prayer rally that security is tight,” said Musiambo as quoted by Daily Nation. Uhuru had invited Kenyans to Afraha Stadium for a thanksgiving service immediately after the termination of the ICC cases against Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang. “When the ICC case against me was dropped, I told Kenyans that I could not celebrate until all the cases had been terminated. So, today, I call upon all Kenyans of goodwill to join us at the Afraha Stadium,” Uhuru said in a statement. He said the event would be an opportunity for prayers for healing, reconciliation and unity but the opposition leaders were not convinced. CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka later said that the planned rally had nothing to do with national healing as Uhuru claimed. “What will happen there is two communities coming together to politically strategise on how to continue oppressing the other communities,” said Kalonzo as quoted by The Star. The opposition leaders announced a plan to counter Jubilee’s thanksgiving rally at Afraha Stadium. On that day, CORD said it would hold a parallel rally in Nairobi’s Kibra to push for justice for the 2007/8 post election violence victims. The leaders would also address the electoral reforms that they want implemented before the 2017 elections. Ruto, Uhuru and Sang were among six individuals who had been named in 2010 by the then ICC chief prosecutor Louis Moreno Ocampo as having been the most responsible for the 2007/2008 violence. Others, whose cases have since been dropped, were: Henry Kosgei, Francis Kimemia and Hussein Ali.
